A study of Nagayoshi's exertions in the consolidation of his power, as related in the preceding chapter, affords insights into several key aspects of governance in that disordered age. One is struck first by the overriding decentralization that prevailed, with a multiplicity of warlords and vassals, the enfeebled Bakufu, and the temporalities all contending in shifting concord and opposition for mastery and influence. No strong, supreme authority endured to impose peace and unity upon the realm. Instead, an incessant tangle of conflicts and realignments held sway, shaped as much by the vagaries of personal relationship, obligation and injury as by motives of policy. Thus the gesture of Oda Nobuhide in gifting a falcon to Hosokawa Harumoto would have its part to play when Nagayoshi later sought to bring to bear his connection with that lord. The slaying of Nagayoshi's father at Miyoshi Masanaga's treacherous hands bequeathed a blood feud whose consequences, to be recounted below, were of great moment.&nbsp; Despite its diminished authority, the Bakufu could still exert influence as a moderating force amidst these contending factions. We find the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru striving to preserve a measure of stability by opportune intervention to counterbalance hostile interests, consenting to Nagayoshi's suit while commissioning a neutral party such as Rokkaku Sadayori to negotiate an accord. Potent religious houses like the Ishiyama Honganji acted as formidable political and military players in their own right, their allegiance jealously courted as in the case of Nagayoshi and the prelate Shonyo. Across this landscape, the intermingling of religion, secular policy and the profession of arms was intricate and pervasive. We have seen too how transient and imperiled was the tenure of power, with the possession of the capital itself passing from hand to hand while the Shogun was driven to dispatch his own household from its midst to refuge. In sum, Nagayoshi's early fortunes afford us a revealing aperture upon the tumultuous realities of authority, conflict and the exercise of power in that epoch when the centripetal forces of governance had catastrophically decayed. Where once a paramount sovereign held sway, an embroiled mosaic of regional warlords, vassals and monastic powers engaged in fluxional, high-stakes contestation for dominion over lands, wealth and the instruments of influence. Success might hinge as much upon acuity in managing the bonds of personal fealty as upon sheer martial capacity; upon adroit husbandry of key institutional support as upon mere preponderance of arms. It was an age of profound instability bordering on anarchy, yet one which would ultimately cede to the reunification of the realm beneath the banners of Nobunaga, Hideyoshi and Ieyasu.<h2>The Siege of Eguchi Castle and Masanaga's Downfall</h2>Word was brought to Nagayoshi by Yusa Naganori that the death of his father was due to the sinister workings of Miyoshi Masanaga. Fired with a desire for vengeance, Nagayoshi put his grievance in writing and appealed to his nominal lord Hosokawa Harumoto, requesting license to retaliate against Masanaga and his son Masakatsu for this act of treachery. At a council of war Nagayoshi held at Koshimizu Castle it was resolved with one voice that should Harumoto afford protection to Masanaga he too must be accounted an enemy. When Harumoto refused compliance, Nagayoshi took the field in open rebellion, having the support of his stepfather Naganori and of Hosokawa Ujitsuna. In the tenth month of 1548 Nagayoshi laid siege to Enami Castle, Masakatsu's stronghold lying to the northeast of what is now Osaka. Through the rigors of winter he succeeded in cutting off the castle from all supply, and brought ever-increasing distress upon Masakatsu's forces. An attempt by Hosokawa to send a powerful relief army of some 10,000 men, much larger than Nagayoshi's force of 3,000, under Rokkaku Sadayori was obstructed by the fortresses of Nagayoshi's allies which lay across the path to Enami. With the coming of spring Masanaga himself appeared with an army of 3,000 men, preceding the relief forces of Hosokawa. He entered Eguchi Castle near his son's stronghold, there to await the junction with the advancing troops of his lord, and so brought matters to a head. Eguchi Castle was an important fortress whose situation, begirt on three sides by rivers, while rendering it difficulty to assault directly, likewise made it passing easy to cut off from all supply by the besiegers. Nagayoshi promptly laid close siege to Eguchi and summoned his younger brother Fuyuyasu to take post behind the castle to forestall any advance of Hosokawa's troops. Fuyuyasu commanded the Miyoshi pirate fleet, their ships plying the Inland Sea whence they had come, and with these he blocked the three rivers. Thus Masanaga's forces soon found themselves cut off from retreat and all replenishment, for they had made camp at Eguchi with provisions for but three days and had now been there eleven from the twelfth to the twenty-third day of the sixth month. When word reached Nagayoshi that Rokkaku's army was at hand, he assaulted Eguchi Castle while Fuyuyasu attacked from the rivers with his ships. Masanaga's men, ill-nourished and feeble from their protracted confinement in the castle, were overborne, and some eight hundred heads were taken. It is related that Masanaga himself sought to flee by crossing the river and was drowned, an unseemly death for a samurai. The next day Rokkaku's troops arrived to find the battle lost and Masanaga slain, so that there remained nothing for them but to withdraw. This affair at Eguchi well exemplifies the character of warfare in the Sengoku period. Swift movement of troops and close concert between the separate forces was of crucial importance. Success depended above all upon skillful logistics and provision. Castles, though as yet lacking the massive construction of later times, were vital strong points by virtue of their natural defences, earthworks, moats and towers. As artillery was still in its infancy, battles were fought at close quarters with bow and spear and showers of stones from the besieged ramparts.(to be continued)

The chronicle of Miyoshi Nagayoshi's life is one beset by the turmoil of the Sengoku era, when daimyo shifted allegiances as nimbly as leaves adrift on an autumn wind. In recounting this unsettled time, I have relied principally on the research of Nagae Shōichi, whose volume 'Miyoshi Nagayoshi' was published in 1989 by Yoshikawa Kōbunkan. Though I have endeavored to elucidate certain matters from my own studies where needed.&nbsp;It has been no simple task to find the time to properly set down the second part, such are the many demands on a scholar's attention. Yet Nagayoshi's tale is one deserving of greater examination, for he was a man whose life was intricately woven into the tapestry of those tumultuous years. While this present work merely skims the surface, I hold ambitions to pursue a deeper inquiry into this fascinating figure when opportunity permits.The churn of the Sengoku period lends an air of chaos to Nagayoshi's biography, as warlords upended long-standing bonds and formed new alliances with startling regularity. But such was the nature of that age, where conflict raged unceasing and even the mightiest houses rose and fell with dizzying swiftness. It is my humble hope that in relating these events, some greater understanding may be granted to those inclined to study that most unsettled of epochs.<h2>Consolidating Power</h2>The year 1539 found Miyoshi Nagayoshi residing at Koshimizu Castle in Settsu, but in its opening days he undertook a journey to Kyoto to meet with Hosokawa Harumoto. It was during this encounter that Harumoto bestowed upon Nagayoshi a falcon - a bird originally gifted to Harumoto by none other than Oda Nobuhide of Owari, sire to the famed Oda Nobunaga.&nbsp;Ten days thereafter, as Nagayoshi played host to a drinking party, he seized the opportunity to petition for the governorship of Kawachi province. This title had once been held by his own late father, only to be wrested away by the very man who brought about his father's demise - Miyoshi Masanaga. Though Nagayoshi pleaded his case with great vigor, Harumoto denied the request, leading the determined Nagayoshi to appeal directly to the Shogunate then headed by Ashikaga Yoshiharu.In this instance, the Shogunate favored Nagayoshi's claim, installing him as rightful governor of Kawachi. This pronouncement further stoked the enmities between Nagayoshi, Masanaga, and Harumoto - the latter of whom Masanaga sought counsel from in the wake of the proclamation. For Nagayoshi, the appointment both strengthened his position and deepened the ill feelings amongst the embroiled parties. &nbsp;In hopes of brokering peace between Harumoto and his new vassal Nagayoshi, Yoshiharu enlisted the aid of Rokkaku Sadayori, governor of Omi province. Yet these overtures for reconciliation proved fruitless. The new year of 1540 saw Nagayoshi march into Kyoto at the head of 2,500 soldiers, having secured the support of Shōnyo, head priest of Ishiyama Honganji. In response, Harumoto withdrew from the capital on the 17th of the 6th month, retreating to Takao where he was joined by kinsmen Hosokawa Mototsune and Harukata to muster their strength.As conflict loomed, Yoshiharu called upon various daimyo like Hatakeyama Yoshimasa and Takeda Motomitsu to ready themselves for war. Though the Shogun and Rokkaku Sadayori continued efforts to mediate between Nagayoshi and Masanaga, the situation remained fraught. Fearing for their safety, Yoshiharu dispatched his wife Keiju-in and heir Yoshiteru to seek refuge in Yase, north of the capital.Spurred by the unrest gripping Kyoto, Yoshiharu entrusted the keeping of order in the city to Nagayoshi's capable hands. This illustrates the difficulties typifying the Sengoku period when, lacking a strong central authority, the Shogun was compelled to rely heavily upon vassals to maintain stability. Here Yoshiharu chose to favor the upstart Nagayoshi over his own primary vassal Harumoto, no doubt weighing Nagayoshi's demonstrated leadership. Moreover, in seeking to mediate between his conflicted vassals, the Shogun turned to yet another vassal in Rokkaku Sadayori - underscoring the decentralized nature of power and individuals acting independently in that turbulent age.The fourth month of that year saw Miyoshi Masanaga withdraw from the fray, retreating to his estates in Tamba province to the northwest of the capital. Yet his respite would prove brief, for soon he returned to Kyoto at the beckoning of Hosokawa Harumoto. In the wake of failed peace negotiations, a minor clash erupted on the 14th of the 7th month between the forces of Nagayoshi and Masanaga near Myōshinji Temple. Wary of potential hostilities from such powerful overlords as the Rokkaku and Takeda, Nagayoshi was reluctantly compelled to accept terms of peace on the 28th, prompting his withdrawal from Yamazaki at the border between Settsu and Yamashiro provinces. &nbsp;Though he aspired to the deputyship of Kawachi, this prize eluded Nagayoshi's grasp. Come the 8th month, he fell back to the relative safety of Settsu Koshimizu Castle, northeast of Osaka. A departure from his forebears who often sought refuge on Shikoku during periods of strife in the Kinai region, Nagayoshi instead made Settsu his permanent base of operations. He assumed the mantle of governor there, placing himself in direct allegiance to the Shogunate - abandoning his former loyalties to Hosokawa Harumoto. Yet such was Nagayoshi's growing influence that even the Shogun himself began to regard this ambitious vassal with wariness.On the 22nd of the 11th month of 1540, Nagayoshi strengthened his position through the marriage with Hatanoshi, daughter of Hatano Hidetada of Tamba. This strategic union brought the considerable strength of the Hatano into his fold. The birth of their son Yoshi-oki two years later only further cemented Nagayoshi's standing, even as it deepened the rift with the increasingly isolated Harumoto. &nbsp;For in the years that followed, the relationship between Nagayoshi and his erstwhile master ebbed and flowed between enmity and cooperation. In 1541, at Harumoto's direction, Nagayoshi joined forces with Miyoshi Masanaga to campaign against those hostile to the Hosokawa clan. But their efforts were undermined by betrayal, as Kizawa Nagamasa and others turned their cloaks to ally with the enemy. With foes closing in, Nagayoshi was forced to retreat behind the walls of Koshimizu Castle. There he weathered a bitter siege before, with the aid of Masanaga and Yusa Naganori, turning the tide and crushing Kizawa's uprising - avenging the treachery with Nagamasa's death.The closing days of 1543 saw Hosokawa Ujitsuna raise the banner of rebellion against his kinsman Harumoto, with intentions to march upon Sakai. At Harumoto's directive, Nagayoshi himself took the field on the 16th of the 8th month, engaging Ujitsuna's forces in a campaign to crush the uprising. Despite the demands of this military obligation, the multifaceted Nagayoshi also found time to indulge his penchant for poetry, participating in sundry literary contests during this tumultuous period.&nbsp;Yet by the 8th month of 1546, the shifting tides of allegiance saw Hatakeyama Masakuni and Yusa Naganori defect to throw their support behind the rebel Ujitsuna - with none other than Shogun Yoshiharu joining their cause to overthrow Hosokawa Harumoto. In a strategic gambit, Harumoto instructed Nagayoshi to make for Sakai, only for the town to find itself encircled by the combined strengths of Ujitsuna and Naganori upon his arrival. Though Nagayoshi fought tenaciously, a string of defeats befell his forces until reinforcements arrived from his kinsmen Miyoshi Jikkyū, Ataka Fuyuyasu, and Sogō Kazumasa - who had marched from Shikoku to his aid. By December, Yoshiharu had fled to Omi, relinquishing the shogunate to his heir Yoshiteru, while Nagayoshi reclaimed all the castles of Settsu province.The turning point came in the 7th month of 1547, when Nagayoshi achieved a decisive victory over Ujitsuna and Naganori at Shariji Temple near Osaka. This triumph prompted Ashikaga Yoshiharu's return to Kyoto, where he brokered an accord with Hosokawa Harumoto and Rokkaku Sadayori - the latter bound to Harumoto through his daughter's marriage. Deprived of Yoshiharu's leadership, the flagging morale of Ujitsuna's forces paved the way for peace negotiations to commence. Though delayed, these ultimately bore fruit in April 1548 under Sadayori's mediation.These clashes hold great historical significance, for it was Nagayoshi - acting on behalf of the Kanrei Hosokawa Harumoto - who single-handedly defeated the forces of the Shogun himself. Moreover, Nagayoshi's strategies secured the vital support of Rokkaku Sadayori, a powerful daimyo allied to Ashikaga Yoshiharu, thereby enabling peace between the warring factions. Out of the ashes of this conflict, Nagayoshi even forged a lasting friendship with his former foe Yusa Naganori, cementing their bond when he took Naganori's stepdaughter Yuzashi as his wife. Often regarded as the precursor to the ascendancy of Oda Nobunaga, Nagayoshi's story is both fascinating and pivotal in Japanese history. This blog endeavors to chronicle his biography in eight parts, shedding light on the remarkable life and achievements of this influential figure.Please note that I've used the Japanese calendar for the days and months, but for clarity I've converted the era names to the corresponding years of the Western calendar. Born on the 13th of the 2nd month in 1522 in Shibou Castle of Awa Province (now Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture) to Miyoshi Motonaga, a formidable vassal of the Hosokawa kanrei (deputy of the shogun), Nagayoshi's first decade unfolded amidst the escalating tensions between his father's burgeoning regional authority and the machinations of his nominal overlord, Hosokawa Harumoto. Though legend portrays his mother praying for a valorous son while overlooking the rapids of the Yoshino River, Nagayoshi's childhood would be indelibly marked by the brutal death of his father in 1532, felled by treachery from within his own ranks.Nagayoshi's father, Motonaga, commanded formidable authority in his native province of Awa, as well as in Yamashiro, neighboring the capital. Alas, in the sixth month of 1532, an insurrection, cunningly orchestrated by his lord Harumoto and executed by Motonaga's own kinsmen, Miyoshi Masanaga and Kizawa Nagamasa, brought about his demise. These traitorous relatives, envious of Motonaga's sway, perceived him as a threat to be eliminated.&nbsp;During this tumultuous period, young Nagayoshi, a mere decade in age, accompanied his parents on a sojourn to the mercantile town of Sakai. Foreseeing the peril, his prudent father dispatched the lad, in the company of his mother, back to the safety of Awa. Motonaga, valiantly defying the rebel forces, ultimately embraced the honorable deed of seppuku when his position in Sakai became untenable, surrounded by the insurrectionist forces.Hosokawa Harumoto, seeking to eliminate Motonaga, had harnessed the formidable might of the Ikkō-Ikki rebellion, bolstered by the influential Ikkō faction of the Jōdo Shinshū Buddhist sect. However, this potent force soon spiraled beyond Harumoto's control, igniting a broader insurrection against his own authority.On the twentieth day of the sixth month in 1533, the young Nagayoshi, a mere eleven years of age, achieved a remarkable feat by negotiating peace between the warring factions of Ikkō Ikki and Harumoto. Instead, they relied upon their kinsmen and direct retainers as their primary forces, supplemented by contingents of warriors who were vassals yet maintained their own allegiances. These warriors would oft shift their loyalties, gravitating towards the leader possessing the greatest charisma. Remarkably, despite his tender age, Nagayoshi possessed sufficient charisma to successfully broker peace between these rival factions.The young Miyoshi Nagayoshi, having but lately emerged from the tender years of childhood, was soon ushered into the roles and responsibilities of mature manhood through the coming of age ritual. Though this ceremony is conventionally reserved for those of fifteen summers, legend has it that the premature observance in Nagayoshi's case was prompted by precedents set by the 13th Ashikaga shogun Yoshiteru and Hosokawa Akimoto, son of Harumoto, both of whom had undertaken the rites at the tender age of eleven. The following year of 1534 found him allied to the Hongan-ji itself, turning his arms against the army of Hosokawa Harumoto on the 11th day of the eighth month. He further crossed lances with Harumoto's vassal Miyoshi Masanaga in the tenth month, yet through the intercession of Kizawa Nagamasa, the military governor of Kawachi, and in consideration of his youthful years, was restored to Harumoto's service. Later that October, Harumoto charged the young Nagayoshi with reining in his unruly vassals who had embezzled tribute owed to the venerable Hirano Shrine in Kyoto, demanding restitution for their misdeeds.Elevated to the rank of military commander under Harumoto, in the third month of 1536, Nagayoshi led an assault against rebels of the Ikkō sect who, alongside Hosokawa Harukuni, had fomented unrest in Settsu Nakajima. Though his forces were initially repulsed, Nagayoshi prudently sought refuge alongside Kizawa Nagamasa, joining his strength to that of Nagamasa and Miyoshi Masanaga in a renewed strike against the insurgents. William Adams, an English navigator, is often referred to as the "first Western samurai" because he became a retainer of the Shogun after his remarkable voyage to Japan in the early 17th century. His story is one of adventure, resilience and service to the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu.<h2>The Early Life of William Adams</h2>Adams was born in Gillingham, England, in 1564. At the age of 12, he began his maritime career as an apprentice to a shipyard owner from whom he learned the art of navigation. Unfortunately, the fleet's voyage was an unmitigated disaster, a harrowing tale of suffering and loss. From the moment they set sail, the sailors were plagued by sickness and hunger. They endured extreme cold and relentless storms. Attacks by indigenous groups and rival European powers only added to their woes. In this unforgiving environment, the men fought to survive, but one by one they succumbed to the harsh realities of the sea. After almost two years of drifting at sea, they finally arrived on the shores of Kyushu, Japan, in 1600.<h3>Service to Tokugawa Ieyasu</h3>Adams and his crew were initially treated as prisoners by the Japanese authorities. However, his &nbsp;sincerity and knowledge caught the attention of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the powerful daimyo who would later become the first Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate.Impressed by Adams' skills and personality, Ieyasu appointed him as his personal advisor on matters related to Western technology and trade.
